Hi all,
I'm thinking of moving back to Indy after 10 years in SF. (am I crazy?) But seriously, any suggestions on activities/places to meet cool folks? Where does Indy go online? (I haven't noticed a lot of activity on craiglslist Indianapolis...)
Any and all advice would be much appreciated.
best,
dawn

Ummm... ok... I'm gonna throw a penalty flag on that...
Illegal subject change, 10yds and loss of down... -

Re: Illegal Subject Change
Thu, August 19, 2004 - 7:08 AMOkay, okay, so I changed the subject slightly.....What are "they" gonna do? Pull me out of retirement, issue me a new ID card and ship me off to the SandBox? -
-
Re: Illegal Subject Change
Thu, August 19, 2004 - 7:39 AMWell that's why I resigned my officer's commission... I was in the IRR and got a nasty-gram from my personell officer in St Louis gently reminding me that I should get out of the IRR by either picking a new Reserve unit or resigning... So I resigned my commission the next day... Sorry Dubya, but I'm not fighting your war...
So, the question is are you still in the IRR or the Retired Reserves? If so... get out now... -
-
Re: Illegal Subject Change
Thu, August 19, 2004 - 8:03 AMHooah! and all that other Army crap. Being a former NCO, I was smart enough to select the "correct option" of Retired Reserve. I think this war would have to get really ugly (more so than it already is) before "they" would want to snag up this personnel/finance sergeant. -
-
Re: Illegal Subject Change
Thu, August 19, 2004 - 8:15 AMWeeeeeell... being the personnel person you are... you know that the Retired Reserves aren't safe... especially from Rummy and Wolfie...

Thu, September 23, 2004 - 7:41 AMRelative to the rest of Indiana (and the rest of the Midwest, imnsho), Indianapolis is a great city... I wouldn't live anywhere else in the Midwest...
hey Kathi how long have you been here? -

Thu, September 23, 2004 - 8:50 PM"Relative to the rest of Indiana (and the rest of the Midwest, imnsho), Indianapolis is a great city... I wouldn't live anywhere else in the Midwest..."
Funny I usually say the same thing about Bloomington, Indiana. :) We're kind of a progressive island in a sea of uptight, bible-belt, conservativeness...i.e. the rest of the state of Indiana.
Sorry I have to agree with Kathi...Don't do it! I grew up in Indianpolis. Unless you're a big fan of hillbilly conservatives who think the town they live in is "cosmopolitan" (bwahaha!). I've actually thought about MOVING to San Francisco recently. I've visited there twice and loved it both times...If I didn't have family here I would have left eons ago...
I must say though Rob from reading your profile you seem like a pretty interesting guy. What is it about Indianapolis that attracts you? -

Re: Moving to Indy...
Fri, September 24, 2004 - 6:42 AMIt's a city...
It's not impersonal like some cities are (I've lived on the East Coast)...
There are a lot of nice neighborhoods... I live on the north side and there are a lot of nice little subdivisions in Washington Township...
I don't have any misconceptions that Indy is a great cultural mecca... but compared to the rest if Indiana... -
-
Re: Moving to Indy...
Thu, October 7, 2004 - 7:16 AMIndy is ok, but I think I'll stick to my little po-dunk town I live in now. I don't have the right attitude for "city" life.

Re: Moving to Indy...
Mon, October 4, 2004 - 1:21 PMTwo and a half years via a company relocation. I describe Indy to my friends as "rural suburban" instead of "urban suburban". Most people I've met here are not as friendly as other midwest cities. While Indy does have a lot to offer compared to the rest of Indiana... my biggest problem with it is that it is landlocked. I am used to living on/near LARGE bodies of water, not the small retention ponds Indy offers.

Re: Moving to Indy...
Tue, October 5, 2004 - 2:24 PMIndy isn't that bad a town at all, if you know where to look. (Notice the use of the word 'town'.) There are still a lot of cool things to do in Broad Ripple, and the downtown area has come a *long way* since I left there 12 years ago. I get back often to visit family and friends though, and I am happy with most of the changes I have seen.
Still, it does have the small town feel, and culturally some people are still a few years behind here and there (some people still consider Guns 'N' Roses to be cutting edge Rock). I am not saying its the best town in the Midwest, but it does have a lot going for it-- not too terrible traffic, good cost of living, affordable houses (if you owned property in Cali, you're gonna love buying in Indy). All of this doesnt really help with a social life. Hopefully you know someone there who can get you plugged in. The open minded and cool people are there, they're just not always easy to find. Good luck! -

Re: Moving to Indy...
Wed, October 6, 2004 - 9:42 AMI have to agree with you on the traffic thing. That is one in the plus column for Indy.
There are definitely cool parts of Indy to hang out in and I do take advantage, but like you said its finding the right network of people that makes it enjoyable. -

Re: Moving to Indy...
Wed, October 6, 2004 - 11:10 AMOh that kills me too... people complaining about traffic...
This traffic is nothing... I used to live in Connecticut... now THEY had traffic...

Re: Moving to Indy...
Sat, October 9, 2004 - 7:49 PMDawn,
After living in Indy almost my whole life, I'd like to offer to trade you places lol!
Actually, Indy isn't a bad city at all. It's not all that city-ish and, depending on your interests, there are some cool places to hang out. Broad Ripple has gotten too commercial for me - I'd rather be on Mass Avenue or in Fountain Square.
I want to find some like-minded friends so anyone posting here who would like to explore a friendship, give me a yell... -

I arrived here from Detroit one month ago. I have explored Washington from the airport to the far east side. I'm trying to find a job here and would appreciate any input you may give.
The Tribe is my favorite jumping-in place to find leads. Both my fiancee and I are deeply religious, so for us worship and service opportunities are very important.
I agree with you that Massachusetts Avenue is an attractive place where things are happening. Check out Martin University and its vicinity.
We went downtown to celebrate a special event and had dinner at McCormick & Schmick's. Ask for Tina M. as your server when you go. She will autograph your menu and you may take it home to treasure.
For computers, check out Help My Mac, in the Irvington neighborhood on East Washington. Snips, a fashionable hair and nails salon, is nearby, as are many antique and resale shops.
I am not much interested in friendship as in business and professional association. I would like to hear from members who know the business community.
I wish you well,
TimG

Re: Moving to Indy...
Thu, September 15, 2005 - 11:28 PMyes U are crazy--do U need medication. Broadripple is the yuppie area. Far N is expensive. SE quad is blue collar and chemical polution (no not joking) SW is latino. Speedway is a middle ground community. Watch for Circle Mall and Layfayette SQ mall--lots of car theft, car jacking etc. I know from inside line. Had a amn rob and run doen thru one fireing automatic weapon during shopping hrs--one of the Indy basketball team was carjacked there. Glendale is small shopping center with good library access and lots of free parking. Lots of festival activity at the circle all summer. Hope U like it. Geda

Re: Moving to Indy...
Sun, October 2, 2005 - 10:54 AMI lived in Los Angeles for 20 years and am now in Indianapolis where I was born. Indianapolis is a good city to live in, there are alot of things to do downtown, restaraunts, museums, art exhibits. More culture than there was 10 years ago. Also the hispanic population is 10 times what it was a decade ago, so seeing the spanish signs in some neighborhoods makes a Californian seem they are at home.

Fri, December 9, 2005 - 8:20 AMThanks. we're looking around too for a place to move.
Gay acceptance in Indianopolis? We're not bar people. More prone to living at home, art, music, that sort of thing.
Oh and a change of subject will now get you indicted under the new Roberto Gonzales/Tribe rules.
Word has it that means three years at Guantanamo or five in a Polish torture camp.

Re: Moving to Indy... I recently arrived; welcome home!
Wed, January 4, 2006 - 8:25 PMDawn:
I spent some 10 years in San Francisco and graduated from college there. I arrived here from Detroit one month ago.
My fiancee and I enjoy Mi Amigos restaurant on East Washington near German Church Road. We also enjoy the Irvington neighborhood, including Lazy Daze coffee house.
There is a storefront church and a cafe called Unleavened Bread at the intersection of Central and 30th. I find that a great place to meet people. On Saturdays the computer lab is open to members of the community from 10 am to noon. I hope to see you there.
I'm in the midst of another job search and find The Tribe to be among my best tools for this purpose.
Welcome home,
TimG
